A responsible AI adoption checklist for Australian organisations

Steps to adopt generative AI safely in line with Australia's AI Ethics Principles and the Voluntary AI Safety Standard.

Generative AI can save hours of work every week, but only if it is adopted with clear guardrails. Here is the checklist we use with clients.

Start with a use-case register

List every proposed AI use. For each one, record its owner, the data it touches, and its risk rating. Begin with low-risk, high-volume tasks such as drafting, summarising and searching internal knowledge.

Align to Australian guidance

Use Australia's eight AI Ethics Principles and the Voluntary AI Safety Standard guardrails as your framework. Government agencies should also follow the Policy for the responsible use of AI in government and any state-specific guidance.

Protect your data

  • Use enterprise AI services that do not train on your data
  • Keep sensitive data in Australian regions
  • Apply your existing classification and access controls to AI tools

Keep a human in the loop

Make sure a person reviews AI output before it affects a customer, a citizen or a decision. Log prompts and responses so you can audit them.

Measure and iterate

Define success metrics before you launch: time saved, accuracy, satisfaction. Then review them monthly.
